Papers ofthe New England Commission for United Ministries in Higher Education, 1950-1973

The papers constitute the official archive of theorganization from its formation in 1967 until its dissolution in 1973. Theycontain detailed information about the local Christian ministries programs ofvarious colleges and universities in New England. The input of the followingdenominations to these programs is documented: American Baptists, ChristianChurch (Disciples of Christ), Protestant Episcopal Church, United Church ofChrist, United Methodist Church, United Presbyterian Church. The New EnglandCommission for United Ministries in Higher Education was formed in 1967 toorganize ecumenical ministries in place of the duplicating and competingdenominational ministries in centers of higher education throughout the NewEngland states. It worked closely with the University Christian Movement in NewEngland, serving as the 'church agency' that provided funds and personnel forthe 'student agency' as needed. It continued in its work of coordinatingprograms and raising funds for them until its dissolution in 1973.

The first congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in New Mexico was organzied by John C. Hay, in Roswell, in August 1893. Both the First Christian Church in Albuquerque and the Carlsbad church were established in 1910. A congregation at Portales was also organized in 1910.
